Brick Calculator
Estimate bricks for a wall from length, height, brick size, and mortar joint—single or double wythe—with wastage and optional mortar materials and cost.
Ordering bricks without accurate calculations means either running short mid-build or paying for a pile of leftovers. The brick calculator estimates the exact number of bricks needed based on your wall dimensions, brick size, mortar joint thickness, and a 5% wastage allowance — plus the total material cost. Whether you're building a garden wall or a full house exterior, More Construction Calculators collection gives you precise brick counts before you place a single order.
The brick calculator is a construction tool that estimates the number of bricks required for a wall based on wall dimensions, brick size, and mortar joint thickness. It applies a wastage factor and calculates the total material cost — giving you a complete brick estimate in one place.
What Is a Brick Calculator?
A brick calculator is a tool used to accurately estimate the number of bricks required for construction projects, minimizing waste and material costs. It calculates brick needs based on wall dimensions, wall type (single or double), brick size, and mortar joint thickness — and includes a wastage allowance to account for broken or cut bricks.
The Brick Calculation Formulas
Volume Method
Total Wall Volume (L × H × W) ÷ Volume of One Brick (including mortar) = Total Bricks
2D Wall Area Method
Wall Area (L × H) ÷ Face Area of One Brick (including mortar) = Total Bricks
The face area of one brick including mortar = (Brick Length + Mortar) × (Brick Height + Mortar).
At default values (200 mm brick length, 100 mm brick height, 10 mm mortar joint): Face area = (200 + 10) × (100 + 10) = 210 × 110 = 23,100 mm² = 0.0231 m² Bricks per m² = 1 ÷ 0.0231 = approximately 43 bricks per m²
How the Brick Calculator Works
Wall Details Inputs
Type of wall — default: Single (also Double available)
Wall length (L) — length of the wall (unit: meters)
Wall height (H) — height of the wall (unit: meters)
Wall area — auto-calculated from L × H (m²)
Brick Details Inputs
Brick length (l) — default: 200 mm
Brick height (h) — default: 100 mm
Brick width (w) — default: 100 mm
Mortar joint thickness (t) — default: 10 mm
Bricks Required Outputs
Bricks needed — auto-calculated base count
Brick wastage — default: 5%
Total bricks needed — bricks needed + 5% wastage

How to Calculate Bricks — Step by Step
Example 1: Single Garden Wall
Wall: 5 m long, 1.5 m high. Default brick size (200 × 100 × 100 mm). Mortar: 10 mm.
Step 1: Wall area = 5 × 1.5 = 7.5 m². Step 2: Face area per brick with mortar = 210 × 110 = 23,100 mm² = 0.0231 m². Step 3: Bricks needed = 7.5 ÷ 0.0231 = 324.7 ≈ 325 bricks. Step 4: With 5% wastage = 325 × 1.05 = 342 total bricks.
Enter: Wall length = 5, Wall height = 1.5, all brick defaults. Result: ~342 total bricks.
Example 2: Larger Wall with Cost
Wall: 10 m long, 3 m high. Price = INR 8 per brick.
Step 1: Wall area = 10 × 3 = 30 m². Step 2: Bricks needed = 30 ÷ 0.0231 = 1,298.7 ≈ 1,299 bricks. Step 3: With 5% wastage = 1,299 × 1.05 = 1,364 total bricks. Step 4: Total cost = 1,364 × 8 = INR 10,912.
Brick Count Reference Table
Wall Area | Bricks (no wastage) | Bricks (5% wastage) |
|---|---|---|
5 m² | 216 | 227 |
10 m² | 433 | 455 |
20 m² | 866 | 909 |
30 m² | 1,299 | 1,364 |
50 m² | 2,165 | 2,273 |
Note: Values use default brick size (200×100 mm) with 10 mm mortar joint — approximately 43 bricks per m². Actual counts vary with brick size and mortar thickness.
