What Is Wall Framing?

Wall studs are vertical members spaced at regular intervals along the wall length. The Framing Formula
The calculator uses this formula to determine studs needed:
(Wall Length ÷ OC Spacing) + 1 = Studs Needed
The "+1" accounts for the end stud at the final bay. For a 12 ft wall at 16 in OC spacing:
12 ft = 144 in. 144 ÷ 16 = 9 bays. 9 + 1 + 1 end stud = 11 studs.

For total cost with waste:
Price per Stud × Studs Needed × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100) = Total Cost

How to Calculate Framing — Step by Step
Example 1: Default Wall
Wall length = 12 ft, OC spacing = 16 in.
Step 1: Convert wall length — 12 ft = 144 in. Step 2: Divide by spacing — 144 ÷ 16 = 9 bays. Step 3: Add end studs — 9 + 2 = 11 studs.
Result: 11 studs — matches the calculator's default output exactly.
Example 2: Longer Wall at 24 in Spacing
Wall length = 20 ft, OC spacing = 24 in.
Step 1: Convert — 20 ft = 240 in. Step 2: Divide — 240 ÷ 24 = 10 bays. Step 3: Add end studs — 10 + 2 = 12 studs.
Enter: Wall length = 20 ft, OC spacing = 24 in. Result: 12 studs. At a price of $5 per stud with 15% waste: 12 × $5 × 1.15 = $69 total cost.

How many studs are in a 12x12 room?

What is OC spacing in framing?

Why does the calculator add a waste percentage?
