Butter measurements are genuinely confusing — recipes switch between sticks, cups, grams, tablespoons, and ounces like it's nothing. A butter converter solves this instantly. Type in any value and it auto-fills every other unit at the same time.

Whether you're halving a recipe, following a US recipe in a metric kitchen, or just trying to figure out how many tablespoons are in a stick, this guide covers what butter is, how the converter works, a full conversion reference table, and how butter is made from scratch if you're feeling ambitious.

What Is Butter?

Butter is a dairy product made by churning milk or cream until the fat separates and forms a semi-solid emulsion. It's one of the most used ingredients in cooking and baking worldwide.

Key facts:

  • Fat content: 80–82% milkfat

  • Also contains: water, salt (in salted varieties), and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E

  • Uses: cooking fat, baking ingredient, spread, sauce base

  • Calorie density: high — roughly 100 calories per tablespoon

In baking especially, precise butter measurements matter. Too much or too little changes texture, moisture, and structure — which is why a reliable butter calculator is worth bookmarking.

How to Make Butter at Home

If you want to go full from-scratch, making butter is surprisingly simple:

  1. Start with heavy cream — full-fat, at room temperature works best

  2. Pour into a jar or stand mixer — a sealed mason jar works for the manual method

  3. Shake or whip — if shaking by hand, it takes 10–20 minutes; a mixer takes 3–5 minutes on high

  4. Watch for separation — the cream will first become whipped cream, then suddenly separate into a yellow solid (butter) and white liquid (buttermilk)

  5. Drain the buttermilk — save it for pancakes or baking

  6. Rinse the butter — knead under cold water until water runs clear, which removes excess buttermilk and extends shelf life

  7. Add salt if desired — mix in a pinch for salted butter

  8. Store — refrigerate for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months

One cup of heavy cream produces roughly ½ cup (1 stick / 113g) of butter.

🧈 Fun Fact: The world record for the largest butter sculpture weighed over 2,000 pounds and was carved at the Iowa State Fair. Entire cows, barns, and farm scenes — sculpted entirely from butter. Somewhere, a baker is doing the math on how many cookies that would make. 😄

FAQs

How many tablespoons are in a stick of butter?

Exactly 8 tablespoons per stick. One stick = ½ cup = 4 oz = 113g. Most US butter wrappers even have tablespoon markings printed on the wrapper for easy cutting.

How much is 100g of butter in cups?

100g of butter is approximately 0.44 cups — just under half a cup. In tablespoons, that's roughly 7 tbsp. Use the butter converter for any gram value and it fills in cups, sticks, and tablespoons instantly.

Is salted and unsalted butter the same in conversion?

Yes — the weight and volume conversions are identical. The only difference is salt content, which affects flavour. Most baking recipes call for unsalted so you can control the salt level yourself.

How many grams is 2 sticks of butter?

2 sticks = 226 grams (approximately 227g). That equals 1 cup, 16 tablespoons, or 8 ounces — whichever unit your recipe uses.
