A percentage point and a percentage change are not the same thing — and confusing them is one of the most common mistakes in economics, statistics, and everyday reporting. A percentage point calculator takes two percentage values and instantly gives you both the percentage point difference (pp) and the percentage difference (%) — so you always know which one you're actually looking at.

Enter Percent #1 and Percent #2 — and get both outputs in one step.

An interest rate rises from 5% to 7%. Did it increase by 2%? Or 40%? The answer depends on which measurement you use — and both are technically correct, just measuring different things.

The percentage point calculator removes the confusion. Enter two percentage values and get both the percentage point difference and the percentage difference instantly.

What Is a Percentage Point?

A percentage point (pp) is the simple arithmetic difference between two percentage values — calculated by direct subtraction.

Percentage Point Difference = Percent #2 − Percent #1

Key facts:

  • Abbreviated as pp or p.p.

  • Measures absolute change between two percentages

  • Always a straightforward subtraction — no division needed

  • Used heavily in economics, statistics, interest rates, and survey results

Percentage Point vs Percentage Change

Percentage Point (pp)

Percentage Change (%)

What it measures

Absolute difference between two % values

Relative change from original value

Formula

% #2 − % #1

((% #2 − % #1) ÷ % #1) × 100

Example (5% to 7%)

2 pp

40%

Used for

Comparing two rates directly

Measuring relative growth

Can be confused with

Percentage change

Percentage points

This distinction matters enormously in real-world reporting — a politician saying unemployment dropped "2 percent" versus "2 percentage points" are very different claims.

Percentage Point Formula

Percentage Point Difference = Percent #2 − Percent #1

Percentage Difference = ((Percent #2 − Percent #1) ÷ Percent #1) × 100

How the Percentage Point Calculator Works

Percentage Points Section — Inputs

  • Percent #1 — your first percentage value (%)

  • Percent #2 — your second percentage value (%)

Outputs

  • Percentage point difference — displayed in pp (direct subtraction)

  • Percentage difference — displayed in % (relative change)

Numeric Values Section

A secondary section for working with raw numeric values alongside percentages — collapsed by default.

How to Calculate Percentage Points — Step by Step

Example 1 — Interest Rate Change

Interest rate rises from 5% to 7%

  1. Percentage point difference = 7 − 5 = 2 pp

  2. Percentage difference = ((7 − 5) ÷ 5) × 100 = 40%

The rate increased by 2 percentage points — but by 40% relative to its original value. Both are correct — they measure different things.

Example 2 — Voter Approval Rate

Approval rises from 40% to 45%

  1. Percentage point difference = 45 − 40 = 5 pp

  2. Percentage difference = ((45 − 40) ÷ 40) × 100 = 12.5%

Example 3 — Inflation Change

Inflation drops from 8.5% to 7.8%

  1. Percentage point difference = 7.8 − 8.5 = −0.7 pp

  2. Percentage difference = ((7.8 − 8.5) ÷ 8.5) × 100 = −8.24%

A negative result means the percentage decreased.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1% the same as 1 percentage point?

No — they measure different things. 1 percentage point means a direct difference of 1 between two percentage values (e.g., 5% to 6%). 1% as a percentage change means a 1% relative increase from the original value (e.g., 5% to 5.05%). They only happen to be equal when the original value is exactly 100%.

What is 70% out of 20 points?

70% of 20 points = (70 ÷ 100) × 20 = 14 points. This is a standard percentage-of-a-number calculation — different from percentage point difference. Here you're finding a portion of a total score, not comparing two percentage values.

What is 0.7 percentage points?

0.7 percentage points (0.7 pp) means a direct difference of 0.7 between two percentage values — for example, inflation dropping from 8.5% to 7.8% is a decrease of 0.7 pp. It is a very small but meaningful change in economic and statistical reporting where even fractions of a percentage point matter significantly.
