The Tile Calculation Formula

The calculator uses this formula to determine tiles needed:

Step 1 — Calculate tile area including gap: (Tile Length + Gap Width) × (Tile Width + Gap Width) = Tile Area with Gap

Step 2 — Calculate number of tiles: (Total Area to Be Tiled ÷ Tile Area with Gap) × (1 + Waste Factor ÷ 100) = Number of Tiles

At the default gap width of 0 mm and waste factor of 10%, the formula simplifies to: (Total Area ÷ Tile Area) × 1.10 = Number of Tiles

How to Calculate Tiles — Step by Step

Example 1: Bathroom Floor, No Gap

Room: 3 m × 2.5 m. Tile: 30 cm × 30 cm. Gap: 0 mm. Waste: 10%.

Step 1: Total area = 3 × 2.5 = 7.5 m². Step 2: Tile area = 0.30 × 0.30 = 0.09 m². Step 3: Tiles needed = (7.5 ÷ 0.09) × 1.10 = 83.33 × 1.10 = 92 tiles.

Example 2: Kitchen Wall with Gap

Step 1: Total area = 4 × 2 = 8 m². Step 2: Tile area with gap = (20 + 0.3) × (20 + 0.3) cm = 20.3 × 20.3 = 412.09 cm² = 0.04121 m². Step 3: Tiles needed = (8 ÷ 0.04121) × 1.10 = 194.1 × 1.10 = 214 tiles.

What does gap width mean in the tile calculator?

Gap width is the spacing between tiles — also called grout joints. The default is 0 mm, meaning no gap. In practice, most tile installations use a 2–5 mm gap for floor tiles and 1–3 mm for wall tiles. Entering a gap value increases the effective tile area and slightly reduces the total tile count.
