Buying too few tiles mid-project means waiting on reorders that may not match your batch. Buying too many wastes money. The tile calculator takes your area dimensions, tile size, gap width, and waste factor — then tells you exactly how many tiles you need and the total box cost.

Whether you're tiling a bathroom floor or a kitchen wall, Similar Construction Calculators collection makes material estimation accurate and hassle-free before you ever open a box.

The tile calculator is a construction and home improvement tool that estimates the number of tiles required to cover a rectangular area, accounting for tile gaps and a waste factor. It also calculates material cost based on tiles per box and price per box — giving you a complete picture of what you need before you shop.

What Is Tiling?

Tiling is the process of applying tiles to cover a surface such as a floor, wall, or countertop. Tiles are thin, flat slabs made from materials like ceramic, porcelain, stone, or vinyl — cut to uniform sizes and laid in a pattern with consistent gaps between them. Accurate tile estimation is essential in tiling work because tiles are sold in boxes, not individually, and batch color variations make mid-project reorders risky.

The Tile Calculation Formula

The calculator uses this formula to determine tiles needed:

Step 1 — Calculate tile area including gap: (Tile Length + Gap Width) × (Tile Width + Gap Width) = Tile Area with Gap

Step 2 — Calculate number of tiles: (Total Area to Be Tiled ÷ Tile Area with Gap) × (1 + Waste Factor ÷ 100) = Number of Tiles

At the default gap width of 0 mm and waste factor of 10%, the formula simplifies to: (Total Area ÷ Tile Area) × 1.10 = Number of Tiles

How the Tile Calculator Works

Area to Be Tiled Inputs

  • Length of area (L) — total length of the surface to be tiled (unit: meters)

  • Width of area (W) — total width of the surface to be tiled (unit: meters)

  • Total area to be tiled — auto-calculated from L × W (m²)

Tile Requirements Inputs

  • Tile length (l) — length of one tile (unit: cm)

  • Tile width (w) — width of one tile (unit: cm)

  • Gap width (g) — spacing between tiles, default: 0 mm

  • Waste factor — allowance for cuts and breakage, default: 10%

Materials Needed and Cost

  • Quantity of tiles per box — enter how many tiles come in one box

  • Price per box — enter your box price (INR/box)

  • Results display total tiles needed, boxes required, and total cost once all inputs are filled

How to Calculate Tiles — Step by Step

Example 1: Bathroom Floor, No Gap

Room: 3 m × 2.5 m. Tile: 30 cm × 30 cm. Gap: 0 mm. Waste: 10%.

Step 1: Total area = 3 × 2.5 = 7.5 m². Step 2: Tile area = 0.30 × 0.30 = 0.09 m². Step 3: Tiles needed = (7.5 ÷ 0.09) × 1.10 = 83.33 × 1.10 = 92 tiles.

Enter: L = 3, W = 2.5, Tile length = 30 cm, Tile width = 30 cm, Gap = 0, Waste = 10%.

Example 2: Kitchen Wall with Gap

Room: 4 m × 2 m. Tile: 20 cm × 20 cm. Gap: 3 mm. Waste: 10%.

Step 1: Total area = 4 × 2 = 8 m². Step 2: Tile area with gap = (20 + 0.3) × (20 + 0.3) cm = 20.3 × 20.3 = 412.09 cm² = 0.04121 m². Step 3: Tiles needed = (8 ÷ 0.04121) × 1.10 = 194.1 × 1.10 = 214 tiles.

Enter your dimensions and gap width into the calculator — it handles the gap adjustment automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?

Divide your total area by the area of one tile, then multiply by 1.10 to include a 10% waste factor. For example, a 10 m² floor with 30×30 cm tiles needs (10 ÷ 0.09) × 1.10 = 123 tiles. Enter your dimensions into the tile calculator and it does this automatically.

What is the waste factor in tiling?

The waste factor accounts for tiles that get cut, cracked, or discarded during installation. The default in this calculator is 10%, which is standard for straightforward rectangular layouts. Complex patterns or diagonal cuts may require a higher waste factor of 15–20%.

What does gap width mean in the tile calculator?

Gap width is the spacing between tiles — also called grout joints. The default is 0 mm, meaning no gap. In practice, most tile installations use a 2–5 mm gap for floor tiles and 1–3 mm for wall tiles. Entering a gap value increases the effective tile area and slightly reduces the total tile count.

How does the calculator estimate box cost?

Enter the number of tiles per box and the price per box in the Materials needed and cost section. The calculator divides the total tile count by tiles per box to get the number of boxes needed, then multiplies by the price per box to return the total cost in INR.
